Piercing the Veil

Emelie's final lesson of the early craft. Bring three offerings, burn a spectral focus at an Old Circle and speak with the Keeper of the Veil.

The level-20 Witchcraft quest. The rewards are 1,200 Witchcraft XP, 2 Quest Points and the Spectral Sight ritual.

1× Moonwax Candle (consumed) Make it: Binding ritual (Witchcraft 8).
1× Spectral Ember (consumed) Make it: Binding ritual (Witchcraft 18).
1× Spirit Ash (consumed) Make it: Binding ritual (Witchcraft 12); Drop: Grave Wight (1/5) and 2 more.

The three offerings can be handed over on separate visits, in any order.

The Keeper lends 90 seconds of Spectral Sight once, when the conversation ends.

Unlocks the Spectral Sight ritual: 90 seconds of the existing Spectral Sight at any ordinary circle (never with a Portable Ritual Kit). It never shortens a longer sight and is refused, free, while more than 60 seconds remain.

Three offerings. You can hand them over on separate visits, in any order:
- Something that has burned: Spirit Ash (crafted at Witchcraft 12 from a Witch's Candle and a Dried Herb Bundle).
- Something that burns cold: a Spectral Ember (crafted at Witchcraft 18 from 2 Spirit Ash and a Witch's Candle).
- Something that holds moonlight: a Moonwax Candle (crafted at Witchcraft 8).

None of them needs Spectral Sight to gather. Also discover an Old Circle: north-east of Emelie's cottage at (74, 40) in the North Wilderness, or in the far west of Southfield Farms at (5, 25). Walking up to one is enough.

  1. Talk to Emelie and choose Ask about Piercing the Veil.

  2. Talk to Emelie with any of the offerings in your backpack. She takes each one she still needs and tells you what is missing. Your journal ticks off each one you hand over. When all three are in, she binds them into a Spectral Ritual Focus.

  3. At an Old Circle, open the ritual book and perform Piercing the Veil (Spiritcraft tab). The focus is used up.

  4. A conversation with the Keeper of the Veil opens. Every answer leads to the same ending. If it closes early, the Keeper stays beside the stones, visible only to you. Talk to it, or choose Listen at the stones, to continue. When the conversation ends, the Keeper lends you 90 seconds of Spectral Sight, once. Look around: a spirit waits beside every Old Circle, and only Spectral Sight shows it.

  5. Talk to Emelie to complete the quest.

Notes

  • The Spectral Sight ritual needs a Spectral Ember and 1 Spirit Ash. It works at any ordinary ritual circle, never with a Portable Ritual Kit, and grants the game's existing Spectral Sight for 90 seconds (100 seconds for Veilwardens with the Thin Veil perk).
  • It never shortens a longer sight: a Veilseer Elixir gives 5 minutes, and Emmy's Special Candy sometimes gives 90 seconds. While more than 60 seconds remain, the ritual is refused and nothing is used.
  • Everything hidden by the Veil (Ghostberry and the other spectral resources, mirage fishing spots, the spirits) fades in when the sight starts and fades out in its last seconds. One countdown in the buff bar shows the time left, whatever gave you the sight.
  • Emelie re-issues the focus if you lose it before the rite.
