Dig a hole

Eric the miner wants to teach you about the mountain. Hear Thomas out, trade copper with Greg, and bring Eric a rare piece of ore.

Enter the Cave through the west edge of the Overworld at (0, 10–12); Eric stands just inside.

A short errand between the Cave and the smith's house that ends with your first real pickaxe. Greg gives you a basic pickaxe if you have none, and all the copper you need can be mined inside the Cave.

Items you need to hand in or show during the quest, and the quickest known ways to get them. Items given to you by NPCs during the quest are not listed.

4× Copper Ore (consumed) Buy from Greg for 10 coins (+1 more shops); Gather: Copper Rock (Mining 1); Drop: Dark Dwarf (51597/250000) and 1 more.
  • 4 Copper Ore for Greg (taken at the trade). You can mine them on the spot: the Cave has ten copper rocks, the nearest at (8, 7) and (9, 7), just past the entrance. Mining 1 is enough.
  • No pickaxe? Greg gives you a Wood Pickaxe when you first speak to him.
  • Keep a free backpack slot for the ore Greg gives you and one for the reward pickaxe.
  • The Cave has Dwarven Miners (combat level 6). They are worth avoiding at very low levels.

  1. From the starting village walk west to the cave mouth on the western edge of the Overworld at (0, 10–12). You arrive inside near (4, 4); Eric the miner stands a few steps away around (6, 5). Choose Talk about Dig a hole.

  2. Leave the Cave and go to Thomas. His smith house door is at (34, 9) in the Overworld; he works inside by the anvil. Use the quest topic to hear what he knows about golden ore.

  3. Return to the Cave and find Greg around (7, 18). Talk to him about the quest: he asks for exactly four Copper Ore. If you have no pickaxe, he gives you one now.

    You always have to hear his offer first, even if you already carry the copper; just talk to him a second time.

  4. Mine 4 Copper Ore (see Preparation) and talk to Greg about the quest again. He takes all four and hands you a Golden Ore.

  5. Walk back to Eric near the Cave entrance and use the quest topic. He takes the Golden Ore and rewards you.
